Been combing through old pics and came across these 2 frames from when I worked for the AD. Grief is a funny thing which at first seems like it will never stop being painful and the truth is that it never really does. It just somehow becomes more dull over time. I still can feel these folks pain and when I look at these and I hope at least it has dulled somewhat now for them. The first frame is of Norm Sanders, left, who lost his stepson Jack Martin when he was brutally murdered along with his wife Susan Martin in their home in Sutter in July 2010. The second frame is Debbie Campbell, left,is comforted by Kelly Schumacher while friends erect a 9-foot cross at the intersection of Highway 20 and Acacia Avenue in memory of her boyfriend Paul John Hendrickson on Friday, Oct. 22, 2010. Debbie Campbell was injured in the fatal motorcycle accident that killed Hendrickson in May 2010.

Been digging through old work and realized that I never posted any pics from this assignment back in November. The Godfrey Family Farms, a Marysville farm hosted day on the farm day for their customers. They have fabulous chicken and farm fresh eggs and sell in the Bay Area if yr interested . Since it was right before Thanksgiving everyone got to pick out their own turkey and participate in the slaughter as much or as little as they wanted. There are some things you get the opportunity to shoot over and over again as a newspaper photog. The first baby of the new year is one of those and it forces you to make something different from year to year and it never ceases to amaze me that people let you experience/photograph these private moments. Shooting a parade always make you work hard looking for something different. The first frame is from before the start of the Live Oak parade. There is something I really like about how everyone kinda fell into place on the curb and matched the building. The other two images are from the Marysville Raceway Park which reopened last weekend after a fatal accident shut the track for several weeks. Read Ryan Klocke's story here.

Friday Night Football and WildFire

My job allows me to experience many different things over the course of week some days bring more excitement than others just like any job and some days bring unexpected long hours. Last Friday I was assigned to shoot some color and atmosphere for the beginning of football season when I got a call from my editor about a large wildfire burning near Bullards Bar Dam in the Yuba foothills. These frames are from the 22 hrs of work in 48 hrs.

Last week I went out with one of our reporters Howard Yune to find people along the Yuba River for a story on the rising water level due to releases from dams upstream. Its rained more than normal here in the mid-valley do to El Nino and with the summer snow melt the reservoirs ( what we call lakes in Cali) are full. You never know what you're gonna find out there either and we got lucky when we came across a man and his dog panning for gold. Read the story here.

Gary Bingham of Gridley pans for gold Thursday with his dog Sam along the Yuba River at Parks Bar Road in the Yuba foothills. The water level rose Thursday on the Yuba River with the scheduled release of water from Englebright Dam and is expected to rise even further do to a larger release at New Bullards Bar Dam. The New Bullards Bar Dam release will increase the flow from 66 cubic feet per second to 2000 cubic feet per second and is expected to last up to three weeks.

All-Area Wrestlers

So by no fault but my own I have been the go to shooter here for are all-area sport portraits. Here's the last one I did of the two MVP wrestlers. I knew I wanted to shoot looking up at the wrestlers in there starting position but had no idea about the lighting since I had never tried something like this before. I'm pretty happy with the final result, thinking back on it though I probably would have placed on more sb800 on the right for more fill besides the just the one, the rim lights are two alien bees 800w. Sometimes bad things happen to good people

David Lewis shaves in the living room of his Linda apartment that he shares with his girlfriend, Carla Burnside. On March 3 Lewis, who was the service manager for Sanchez Truck Repair & Towing, stopped his mechanic's truck on the E Street bridge to assist a driver who had run out of gas. He was struck by a passing car which fractured his left leg and amputated his right leg just below the thigh. David and Carla are such wonderful people for letting me invade their lives at 6:30 am. The couple let me shadow them for several hours (which getting that kind of time with a subject is a rarity in the newspaper world) so our readers could see just how much their lives have changed since the dreadful night on the E Street Bridge from Marysville to Linda. David and Carla inspired me so much with the amazing love that they share with each other. We should all be so lucky. Read the story here and more pics here.

Hydroponic Tomatoes

Had the chance to check out a local tomato growers greenhouse this past Saturday here in Sutter County. It was pretty neat. The article from the AD by Ashley Gebb can be read here. Also check out Ashley's green life blog here.

Alan Claphan harvests vine-ripened hydroponically grown tomatoes in the greenhouse which he built with his business partner Peter Myburgh last year, just west of Yuba City, on the 5000 block of Franklin Road. The men hope to expand their business by adding another greenhouse and exploring the options of growing cherry tomatoes, peppers and lettuce.

Lately I have been working on trying to shoot better portraits in my daily photographic life. I feel like this is an area where I can always improve. So I took it upon myself to set-up a shoot of all the first team all-area boys basketball players for the Sports Department here at the Appeal-Democrat. So with the help of Nathan Weyland who assisted me and after spending 5 hours in the Yuba City High School locker room I came away with a couple of shots that I kinda really like. That's Nathan trying to kill some boredom between shoots and the lighting set up of 4 lights.One main in umbrella softbox, two rim lights and one background light. The final images is how it ran in the paper.

Live Oak Teens

When I lost my mom several years ago it just about devastated my brother, father and I. It was hard to pick up the pieces of our lives. So when I met the Short family it really struck a chord. The three teens lost both their mother and father over a period of five months. The older brother Drew dropped out of Chico State to come home and take legal guardianship of his twin sisters.Sometimes I find myself wondering how these teens are doing now since its been about two and a half months since this was taken. When I got the assignment it was put in as a portrait but while sitting in on the reporter's interview with the teens this lovely little moment happened between the siblings and the light from the large bay window in their living room was just to lovely to ignore. This photo also recently won first place for general news in the December clip contest. You can read the story from the Appeal-Democrat here.

School Bus Driver Training and Bus Maintance Yard Fire

Shot a bus school bus driver training this week for work. This is my favorite frame for the day. The district works with the Yuba City Fire Department and fills up a school bus with fake smoke so that the drivers can experience what a bus fire would be like. Ironically the next day the school bus yard for the district caught on fire. The last 2 frames are from that fire. You can read the story here that ran in the Appeal-Democrat.

I used to spend a lot of time wandering the beach along these cliffs not far from our house. I never realized how uniquely beautiful this surf spot called abs is and the cliffs definitely live up to their name.

Nico dog is so black it hard to get any detail when you photograph him. This is probably the best picture that I have to of him so far. I used a gold reflector to bounce the window light back into him, seemed to work pretty well.

had the pleasure of shooting black friday for work which i meant i got to crawl outta bed at 2:45 a.m. to bare witness to rampant consumerism. it was kinda amazing, but at the same time all i could think is, "what hell is wrong with these people and why do they need like 2 t.v.'s, a blender, several dvd's, and a tom-tom gps device at 4 a.m.

30th Annual Sikh Parade

This past Sunday I got the chance to witness and shoot the biggest Sikh religious procession in the western hemisphere. Basically about 75,000 Sikhs descend on Yuba City for the 3 days of reading their sacred text the Guru Granth Sahib, the book is then put on a giant float and paraded around town and than back to the Sikh Temple Gurdwara. It was pretty awesome. You can read about it here with video(forgive the curry remark in the lede) and a photo gallery.

Maryville Metal!

After shooting ridiculously cute children dressed up as princesses and such for work, I spent the rest of Halloween night the way it should be spent with a bunch of black eye-make-up wearing freaks, at a really awesome metal show. It made me wanna be a rebellious punk rock teenager again, ya know minus the acne and perpetual teasing from peers. It was a great event put on by a local business owner, Ruth Soto for youth. i like working in teams. last week i worked with fellow AD reporter Ryan Klocke on a great story about a young man,Tyler Zepp, quarterback for wheatland high. A humble 18 year-old suffering from a congenital heart defect that put him on the sidelines in his senior year, the year he was to lead his team to victory. Anyway, so the kid gets cleared for 2 plays by his doctor and scores 2 touchdowns. It's kinda amazing! While watering the garden this evening I discovered a fairly large praying mantis in the bell peppers. Seeing that I lived in the city for so long I had no idea that these things existed outside of the pet store. So it was a bit of a surprise, but a pretty cool find I think none the less.

I dug these up from about a month ago when I went back to Sf to see my former colleagues at the Bridge Theatre. They put on a midnight movies series during the summer called Midnight Mass . This summer the 12 yr long series retired and this was probably the last time for awhile that they were to be screening the cult classic Showgirls and dolling out free lap dances if ya buy a large popcorn. Here are the results of that house fire a few weeks ago. I happened to be near it today on my way to a flipped car in a drainage ditch. I'm not the biggest fan of accident photos. I bought rain boots. I also take a lot of pictures of my feet, but so does another photog that i know, Kristina Barker. Here's some spot news I shot last week for the Appeal-Democrat. This house in one of the real rural areas of Sutter County became engulfed in flames do to the fact that the fire department could not get enough water to the area in time. The story can be seen here.

I have spent the last couple of days moving my life from SF and my house by the beach to Olivehurst for a photo-j job with the Appeal-Democrat. It's okay if you don't know where that is neither does googlemaps, my new house doesn't exist when you type in the address. It in the Cali valley north of Sacramento by about 40 mins and about 2 hrs from SF. I am trading in my last ten years of city life for country suburban living, cramped housing for open spaces and people who say "hello" when you pass by. To me this is strange. I've gone from five housemates to one and a dog named Jager.

I covered the election for the Palo Alto Weekly. I was assigned to shoot the 14 district's Obama party. Wow what can I say. I feel real blessed to have had this opportunity to be part of such a historic election. The emotions of the room just overwhelmed me as everywhere I turned people were cheering and crying like this women from East Palo Alto, Cassandra Julian( first 3 pics) who was just so overcome with emotion. What a beautiful experience and something I will never forget.

Did some jack-o-lantern carving this past week with the housemates and my good friend Scott with the knife. Our house's walls are painted orange so it felt a bit like being in one giant pumpkin. The last jack-o-lantern photo was shot by Nathan Weyland. Who also made the most delicious pumpkin pie. yum and it was his first pie attempt.

I spent the last weekend in la, the city of angels. it was a spontaneous trip to celebrate my former housemate Wendy's Bday. I drove down with one of my current housemates Natalie. We took some random kids from craigslist's rideshare with us and dropped them @ this dope house in Brentwood .

We wrapped up the puzzle. yes.. it is finally done and gifted it to Wendy for her birthday.

it was so hot in Downey @ Wendy's that it killed this cat. well, not really Natalie and i thought it was asleep @ first but then she pointed out to me that there were flies in the cat's eyes.
